Internship Logs
DISCLAIMER: I squeezed in all my hours into spring break since I had limited time, I completed a 2 hours before spring break started but that was just to get situated with my senior designer leader so all I have is a 1 week long log that I will split into days
Day 3/30 (1:00 P.M. to 4:00 P.M.) This was one of the stressful days, I had already met Jack (my senior designer leader) but today he assigned me to a group from a small company called github, I had previous experience with github online so I pretty excited to be working for them, my team and I were given a week to compete with other companies groups in seeing who can promote a brand the “best” way. We were given a rubric with all the specifics like what the website should include, outside advertising, how the brand would be discovered, etc. Today our team just decided to discuss what kind of brand we would be promoting and how we would go about it, who should do what, and we ended the day after.
Day 4/1 (1:00 P.M. to 6:00 P.M.) The day was a busy one at that, since my team gave me the role of block coding the website , I spent the whole day discussing with them what they wanted, I argued for a simplistic design but they wanted more color so I made a compromise, since I had previous experience with coding, and the fact that i'm in a computer science class anyway made the coding easy but the transfer of ideas was the hard part, we all worked on our own sections for this day.
Day 4/3 (1:00 P.M. to 6:00 P.M.) Today we coded more but also Jack also let us take a sneak peak at what the other groups were working on and compared to them we were actually doing really good, I kept my head up and coded for this entire day too, we had multiples pages on the site promoting our brand ( Yamaha). The other group members were working on stuff like business cards, posters, envelopes, possible billboard locations.
Day 4/5 (1:00 P.M. to 6:00 P.M) This was the last day of my internship , and sadly it was only the first project for the group , I honestly wish I could have stayed longer because it’s something I like to do in the future , maybe I’ll work for them after college. Anyways, my team wrapped up around 5 P.M and the head of the designers came to grade our promoting, We got the equivalent of an A but we didn’t win the “competition”. There was no prize anyway (haha) but I was proud of myself for being able to work with a team and do something I enjoyed, I gave a goodbye to everyone as they knew it was my last day, I left the building feeling more confident in my abilities.
Internship Closing Report:
This internship was hands down of the most beneficial works I have experienced. Throughout my time at LaunchDarkly, I worked with senior lead designer Jack Moffrey, and other interns to complete a group based project that required intense communication, coordinated planning, precise time management, coding skills, and brand asset creation. Throughout my days you could see me coding, talking through with my team and gaining their input in order to compile our ideas into a website. I was essentially building a brand promoting system by flexing my knowledge on design tools and the internet for 5 hours a day. Darkly has brought out my true colors, I was worried about my communication skills as I didn’t like to talk much and was more of an independent worker, but since I was working on something that I was really interested I was able to push myself to communicate more and accomplish something great, I learned coding techniques and how to simplify so I didn’t have to repeat loops, I learned how to properly coordinate with a team in order to promote brands etc. The only obstacle I faced was differing ideas between my fellow teammates, I wanted one thing for the website, they wanted another, we had to compromise and it worked out in the end. Coming into Darkly I didn’t expect to learn as much, I was thinking it would be more like note taking while watching the designers speak , but it turned out to be so much more inclusive and helpful than I thought, I’m really glad I chose this and hopefully can make it into a future career.
